Intuitionism - Bergson

According to Henri Bergson, there are two main tools for understanding reality: intellect and intuition.

For Bergson, intellect analyses reality statically, allowing us to gather information without grasping reality in its essence.

For example, we can get to know a city by looking at many photographs taken from different angles. But by relying on intellect alone, "we let the very essence of reality escape us".

To grasp reality fully, Bergson argues that we need to combine intellect and intuition.

This requires us to "place ourselves within moving reality, adopt its constantly changing direction and finally grasp it through the intellectual sympathy called intuition".

You will perform precisely this exercise: you will "place yourself within moving reality".

DEBRIEFING Intuitionism - Bergson

Normally, the ball moves and you know its position so that you can hit it back.

In this process, you rely on intellect, but do not grasp the ball’s essence, its reality.

The aim is to actively move everything else and focus on the ball’s reality.

Your motionless index finger kept pointing at the same spot: the ball.

You "placed yourself within moving reality" and followed its constantly changing direction to intuit reality. Perhaps you intuitively grasped its essence.
